The Voice returns for its second season with its celebrity coaches, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton,Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green. The show is a talent competition built upon the idea that people are generally judged based on appearance. That some people, even though they have talent, are surpassed by someone with more of a mainstream look. During the first round, The Voice shows its uniqueness through what is called, “The Blind Audition”.
Each coach is out to form their own team of singers. Eventually, each team will compete against each other. During “The Blind Audition” the coaches can only hear the singer, not see them. Giving them the chance to judge them based on talent, not on appearance. If the coaches hear and love a singer’s voice they press a button that spins them around to see who they have chosen to be on their team.
But, there is a catch: if only one coach presses their button for a singer, they are automatically on that coach’s team. But, if more than one coach presses their button for a singer, that singer now has the choice of which coach they want for themselves, and whose team they’ll be on. If a coach is really passionate about a singer they basically try and sell themselves, explaining why they would be good for them and why another coach may not help them grow as much.
Anxiety is in the air for the families who are in the back with the host watching and waiting for a coach to turn their chair around. For the singers themselves, singing their heart out not knowing if they’ll be picked at all. And for the coaches when they have to fight over who will be picked between the four when someone truly amazing comes along, and it’s up to the singer to decide.
On Monday March 5, The Voice began its second round, “A Battle Phase”. Now that all the coaches have their teams set up, the real competition begins. The coaches pick two people from their team that they think have a similar sound, and have them sing a duet. This shows who of the two is stronger, and deserves to stay.
Each of the two singers is given a different adviser, helping them improve their versatility and strength. Then they go to battle, fighting for their spot on the team. After the duet all coaches give their opinions of the singers; who has what it takes to win, and who may not be quite ready yet.Ultimately it is the coach who decides who will stay on their team.
To see the finalists compete during a live broadcast, stay tuned for the final live performance shows, Monday nights at 8 p.m. on NBC.
