On March 14, 2012, Thomas Lubanga, a Congolese warlord, was found guilty by the International Criminal Court for initiating the Union of Congolese Patriots campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo of abducting children and turning them into murderers.

He was convicted for the forced enlistment of children under the age of 15 and using them to participate in “hostilities” during a civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Under the command of Lubanga, UCP leaders forced children to take part in the civil war that took place from 1998 to 2003; until last year the conflict continued in the mineral rich eastern region of the nation. Witnesses testified that Lubanga ordered for the forced recruitment of children so that these children could kill, rape, and rob, as well as take part in armed conflicts.

Lubanga surrendered in 2006 to the ICC and three years later his trial officially began. Since the ICC established in 2002, Lubanga was their first verdict and trial that was held by the ICC.
