“One of the biggest things that I have had to deal with or at least people have had to deal with in high school are these expectations of them. I think when you’re in high school, you’re forced to fit into a little box where when you’re growing up, you’re either part of the nerd crew or the Asian crew or the jocks or the cheerleaders and it’s really hard to break out of these social norms that are placed on you. I’ve learned that when growing up, it’s totally okay to be different, it’s totally okay to not want to fit into these norms, and it’s totally okay if you want to fit into these norms. When people think of me, they just see a ‘smart Asian girl’ and that’s all they really see, but they don’t really see other sides. One thing that I’ve realized is that everyone has their own story, everyone has their own struggles, and everyone has something that they’re going through. It’s really important that when you are looking at someone, you shouldn’t just put them in a box. You should always think of the other side of things and realize that people aren’t defined by what they put out there. They’re defined by the experiences that they share with other people and the impact they have on other people.” #humansofmaldenhigh
