Senior Bianca Alves is a varsity crew member who joined the team when she was a freshman. She enjoys being on the varsity team because she gets to help people and teach them about rowing. She added that she enjoys being a role model for the underclassmen as well.
Alves believes that the crew team is a really strong team in terms of their athleticism as well as their relationships with each other. They spend a lot of time together, including Saturdays and Sundays which usually lasts from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, which allots time for them to bond and grow closer as a team.
Alves explained that the team’s strong bond helps them to avoid conflicts and focus on the sport itself. She thinks that Sarah Jones is effective and efficient in her coaching abilities but also makes practices and races fun.
Last season, the girls varsity team was co-champs in the GBL with Medford. However, this season there are less girls on the varsity so Alves hopes to keep the GBL title. After three years of varsity rowing, Alves mentioned that she has learned a lot from the sport, her teammates, and the coaches. The discipline of the sport paired with encouragement from her teammates and direction from her coaches has helped her to become a better rower and grow as a person.
Good luck to Alves and the entire team in their first race this season is on Sunday, May 15 in Cape Cod.
