The Malden High School gallery was transformed into a miniature clothing store on Thursday, April 28th. The gallery hosted its first ever “Girls Night”, which is typically held at the Malden Teen Enrichment Center. Not only were girls allowed to shop for clothes, but there were raffles and a showing of the movie “Mean Girls” later on during the event. It was held at the gallery to draw more MHS teens to the annual Girls Night events held at the Teen Center.
Girls Night sells clothings of all types, both used and new, as well as clothes and other accessories. About a hundred girls attended the event, which was organized by MHS history teacher Dana Marie Brown. During winter, coats, scarves, mittens, and other necessities are sold, but at this particular Girls Night, there were more spring-like clothes such as light sweaters, jeans, sneakers, heels, and hats.
The clothes were organized in clothing closets where girls could try on what they wanted and put them back in an organized manner. Some clothing are sold for specific events, while some are everyday clothes. All clothing and other items were free due to the generous donations from teachers and staff at Malden High School, Partnership for Community Schools, the MTEC Board and the Malden YWCA.
The idea for Girls Night came about from the various Open Gym nights and other events that were targeted towards the boys of MHS. These events were a huge success and drew boys towards the teen center, but it was noticed that there weren’t many events held specifically for girls. Therefore, the first Girls Night was held over a year ago in November 2014 at the Teen Center. The event was a huge success, and they have been held annually ever since. The teen center even starting hosting Boys Night back in 2015.
The Girls Nights events have proven to be successful for bringing many MHS girls together and supplying them with free, well-quality clothing. You can find out more about when the next Girls Night event is held at http://maldenteenenrichmentcenter.org/
