The girls tennis team welcomes back junior Samantha Tso for her second year on varsity. Tso has been playing tennis for almost three years, starting the summer before she began attending Malden High School. Out of the many sports offered here at MHS, Tso chose to play tennis because of her family background in the sport and prior knowledge on the rules of game.

Tso participates in many activities outside of besides tennis. She is the secretary of Interact club, a club where she and other members of the club travel around the Boston area volunteering at different places. Tso is also the Historian of the Leadership Mentoring Club, a club where it’s members mentor middle school students and help them with homework. Besides the clubs offered at MHS, Tso plays the piano, and works at Monkey King Tea. This summer, Tso is planning on volunteering at the Melrose-Wakefield hospital.

In school, Tso enjoys her Spanish class the most because she likes to learn about language and different cultures within the Spanish speaking world. Spanish teacher Raisa Herrera is an influential person in Tso’s life since they both enjoy the Spanish language..

As for influential people for Tso regarding tennis, she accredits her uncle. Tso would drive to Newton for the main purpose of playing tennis with him where he teaches her a lot about the sport.

Tso considers the tennis team as a second family. She is grateful for the friendships she has with her teammates who support her on and off the court. They have helped her to grow as a tennis player as well as a person.

Tso believes the strong points of her game lie in her serve as well as recovering from a strong return. She aims to be more consistent as it is an important aspect of playing the sport. Tso looks to finish her season strong and return for another season next year.
