Maldonian Jellybean Fundraiser

This year, the Maldonian is raising money for the yearbook by holding a fundraiser where Malden High School students can guess how many jellybeans there are in a jar. The closest entry will win tickets to a Bruins game, the 2nd closest will win tickets to a Boston College basketball game, and the 3rd closest will win tickets to the Malden vs. Medford Thanksgiving Football game and Junior Varieties.

The Maldonian has always had cover the costs of printing the yearbook themselves. The printing price increased this year to $30,000 and to account for the lack of an official budget for the class, its students and advisor have had to come up with innovative fundraisers.

Beth Horwitz, the MHS Social Committee, was the person that came up with the idea of the Jelly bean. She helps with a lot of things every year with fundraising. She got the idea from her daughter’s school in Peabody two weeks ago. She decided to try it and she did the light work; Horwitz explained how “BJ’s donated the jelly beans and far as prizes go. Lombardi donated Bruins tickets, Lane donated the Boston College basketball tickets, Conefrey donated the Thanksgiving football game and Corcoran helped with the Junior Varieties.”

Valente said that he started selling pies in the beginning of the year to help with the yearbooks and coming this winter. Towards Christmas vacation, he intends to do the same with peppermints and try to get money for printing the yearbooks. In between printing yearbooks, he conducts small fundraisers to help out with money and help with others.

He stated that “the graduates had the remaining amount of money [they] needed, from their graduation”. Still, they were remaining short on money to give for the printers– they needed $1100 to print. The Alumni Association knew they were short on money and decided to help The Maldonian by sending a check with the remaining money that they needed.” Valente began advising Maldonian in 2007 and was the official advisor for photography for others. But he started Mr. MHS since 2003, and this would be his 10th year with Maldonian.

People can pay $1.00 to guess how much jelly beans are in the jar at all four lunches.
