A movie night was held on Thursday, May 31st for a fundraiser that will help children who are suffering from poverty in Cambodia, with the 2017 animation film Coco as the movie playing.
The fundraiser was thrown by the National Honor Society. Seniors, Jasmine Gray and Alicia Tan, organized the event.
Tan was the one who decided on picking the movie Coco. She said that she “[originally] watched it in theaters and it was awesome.” She said that “when [she] was planning the event, the movie had just come out in theaters and won a bunch of awards.” Even though they do not have much experience with hosting a movie night fundraiser, they have had experience in hosting fundraisers in the past.
Tan said that she picked a movie night because “last year [she] did the pie fundraising event and people participating, like the staff members, were scared and the people helping didn’t like it that much.” She said that “[they] decided on doing something a little more tammer so [they] decided on a movie night.”
Tan said that the reason the event only costed a dollar was because “[they] wanted to make it an event for the community, even though [they] wanted to raise money, [they] wanted the community to benefit from it in some way.”
Gray said that “[they] did not want to put too much strain on the people who were coming and that is why [they] asked for donations [from people before hand] and sponsors [as well]. She said that “[they] put a donation bucket at the event just in case someone would want to donate more than just a dollar but it [was not] required.”
Gray said that the fundraiser was for the “Cambodian children fund which is children in poverty who are currently living in the dumps.” She said that “this gives them an opportunity for education, clean water, and housing.” Gray also mentions that “this was a really good family movie for people of all ages and a good community event.”
Tan said that they wanted to thank “all the principles for allowing the event and putting up posters for it.” Tan also said that people might want to come to the event because ”it is for a good cause and it is inexpensive and a great way for the community to bond [with each other].”
