New Addition to Malden High School: Roblox Club

Roblox Club is a new club at Malden High and was introduced at the end of last year. Students, or “Robloxians,” come together after every blue Tuesday to join for their shared love of Roblox. Roblox is an online game that allows users to not only play games but also create their own, which allows students to express their creativity while having fun at the same time.

At first, the idea of the Roblox club was just a joke. Still, after junior Gabriela Parini Cordova, who is also a member of The Blue and Gold, continued to think about it, she decided to make it a real club with the support of the two vice presidents, senior Blue and Gold member Jaslie Fang and junior Linh Do, as well as the two advisors, Kurtis Scheer and Patrick Finnegan.

“I genuinely wanted this club to be a part of the Malden High School community, so I think that’s why they selected me as president. It was a group decision, and no one is above anyone, we all have our own roles that we do within the club, and we just want to have fun at the end of the day,” Cordova explained.

“Linh and I wanted [Mr. Scheer] as an advisor, [because] we both had him for AP US History in our respective years. Scheer has always been someone I could talk to and someone who would keep up with my antics, so he was the obvious choice for me,” Fang explained.

“They help us with ideas and love playing games with all of us. Mr. Scheer and Mr. Finnegan also have a close relationship, so we thought it would be even better if they could have a scheduled time of day to hang out together, chill, and play some games on Roblox,” Cordova continued.

Roblox Club wasn’t created just for fun, but they also wanted it to be a space where students could come to relax after a long day of school and unwind with their friends. “I wanted to represent the people in the club and help them feel like they could have a safe and fun space after school,” Fang stated.

“I like playing because it’s a huge part of my childhood and helps me wind down after a long day,” junior Daniel Flores, a club member, explained.

Cordova, Fang, and Do have all been playing Roblox since they were young. What they love the most, besides the people they can meet and the games they can create, is the diversity in the games they can play. You can choose whatever you’re interested in, they range from different lobbies to horror games to adventurous games.

“I’ve been playing Roblox since the builders club, whenever that year was, and when guests were still a thing. I think that was like 2015 because that’s when I learned how to play video games on my iPad. Roblox is especially fun with friends because you get to communicate and learn how to play whatever game you choose and strategize different ways to win, I think it’s very engaging and a way to de-stress,” Do said.

Fang had started playing Roblox back in first grade when she was introduced to it by one of her friends, but later on, she picked it up again in the fourth grade, where she has been playing ever since. “I enjoy playing Roblox because there are so many different communities, games, and genres that I can choose from. During COVID, there was this loss of social interaction and I think for many people, Roblox acted as a social ground for them—hence why I and the others in my club like Roblox.”

Third year, Diego Meija, has been playing for over five years and believes that “it’s a great way to spend some quality with friends and meet other people who also enjoy Roblox. It’s a great way to bond with friends and meet new people.”

The Roblox Club has become pretty popular here at Malden High School, as 87 people enrolled in the club have joined their Google Classroom.

“I enjoy playing Roblox because there are pretty cool games, and I like playing them with my friends,” junior Nico Sedan, another club member, said.

Many people love Roblox, which was a huge driving factor in the creation of this club. They wanted students to come together and find others with their shared passion. “The club community is what makes me the happiest, as people are brought together who don’t know each other and have never even talked to one another, but come in and work as a team while playing games and having fun after school,” Cordova said.

“The popularity took me aback. I knew that many people in our school enjoyed Roblox, but not to the extent that it has become. I think it’s incredible that so many have joined our space in such little time. If you’d told me this club would become the fastest-growing in Malden High history, especially starting so late in the year, I wouldn’t have believed it,” Fang concluded.
