Although the Girls’ Soccer senior night game against  Lynn Classical ended in a loss for Malden, it proved to be one to remember as it was the senior’s last night playing with their Malden High School team on home turf.

MacDonald Stadium was full of energy. It was packed with decorated posters and gifts for the seniors,  the stands were full of families, students, and others who shouted chants and cheers to support the seniors during their final game.

The game started off with the players determined and ready to put in their best effort, especially those who were playing for the last time at home.

At the beginning of the first half, Lynn Classical made many attempts to score which were all blocked by sophomore goalie Imane Agoumad. Overall, the team had a hard time defending against Lynn until halfway through the first quarter when Lynn made their first goal, making the score 1-0.

Lynn scored four times after, with one more being in the first half and the rest being in the second. But during the end of the second half, junior player Mercedes Costa Aispuro scored Malden’s first and only point.

Malden was struggling both defensively and offensively throughout this game as Lynn Classical is ranked second within the GBL, and when Lynn scored their fifth and final point towards the end of the game, it sealed Malden’s defeat.

This season was one of growth for the girls as players were consistently switching positions in an attempt to see which fit their team the best. The team was also inexperienced, as many of their players graduated in the previous year which hampered team chemistry and led to the unfortunate season record of 4-14.

This season was one of growth for the girls as players were consistently switching positions in an attempt to see which fit their team the best. The team was also inexperienced, as many of their players graduated in the previous year which hampered team chemistry and led to the unfortunate season record of 4-14.

“Our record isn’t the best, but these girls were positive every game. Every practice, they showed up,” Coach Rick Caceda described.

“Our current season has definitely been a struggle, but we made sure to pull through and make the best out of it. I’m really looking forward to seeing how our team can improve and work together to make the playoffs,” Costa explained.

Despite their loss, the team left knowing that they gave this game their all. The seniors and captains helped everyone keep a positive mindset through their attitudes and strong leadership, which shifted the team forward and helped the players focus on trying to change the result of their next game by focusing and improving their mistakes.

“The seniors made a big influence by always making sure to push and motivate our team to try our best,” Costa stated.

Although Malden did not win against Lynn English, Coach Caceda believes that they played well regardless. “We had some mistakes that cost us, but overall, the vibe tonight was really good, so I’m happy with that,” Caceda said. “I think we’ve been doing better with having more ball movement. We’ve been working on that, as the season is going on, just more possession. We have plenty of good chances to score, and we’re still going forward.”

The senior night proved bittersweet for all players, regardless of grade or age, as the seniors were leaving their teammates and coaches with whom they formed close bonds over their years of playing.

“I felt emotional since I have dedicated four years of my life to Malden High Soccer. It was sentimental for me as it felt like a chapter was ending,” highlighted Valentina Hernandez, a senior on the team.

The seniors not only created relationships with their teammates but also formed tight-knit bonds with their coaches who they believe have taught them a lot. “I’m going to miss the special bond that you create with the coaches; it’s a really personal relationship,” senior Sarahy Escobar Ayala also stated.

“I think what I’m going to miss most is the friendships and bonds that I’ve created over the past four years. These friendships are genuinely unforgettable and it’s like a sisterhood that we’ve created with the whole team. I’m going to miss it all,” senior Jazlyn Martinez stated. .

Even though the team lost on their Senior Night, the team’s bond and connection with one another stood out and proved that the team was more than just a soccer team, but a community. “We had the right energy and did everything we could to make sure we went all out for our seniors. Even though we didn’t win tonight, it definitely felt like we did,” Costa concluded.
