Could you think of a better way to spend your Friday night than skating with your friends, sipping hot cocoa, and curating life-long memories? If you cannot, Malden High Skate Club is truly the place to be. The club was the fastest-growing club in the school last year and has continued to grow. Despite regularly switching locations, between Boston and Medford, there is always a big crowd. “My favorite part of the skating club is the fun environment and the people around,” freshman Gyovanna Gomes stated.
The Malden High Skate Club is a fantastic asset for Malden High School, giving students a unique opportunity to become more involved with extracurriculars. The club provides a community for students to be a part of. It offers an outlet for energy and stress, which can be beneficial during the demanding high school years. Most of all, The Malden High Ice Skating Club has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to form lasting friendships.
“My favorite part of Skate Club is being with friends from school and making new relationships with the people there that I didn’t know prior to skate club,” Sophomore Dante Bell mentioned.
The club creates a supportive and inclusive environment where students can bond over their shared interests. Regular events allow students to spend time together every Friday night. These events help break down social barriers, enable the members to gain respect and trust for one another, and form friendships that extend beyond the ice rink.
For the club’s debut night on December 6th, taking place at Steriti Memorial Rink in Boston, many returning members were in attendance along with some brand-new faces. This was the most successful night so far, with an estimated attendance of 50 people.
The club’s second night was on December 13th in Medford at Flynn Rink. While there were fewer people than the first night–the excitement of the first night encouraged student participation—there was still a decent crowd. “In my opinion, Skate Club benefits MHS because it has brought a lot of people together…and I think it’s really cool,” sophomore Carolina Rosa explained.
As winter break approached, there was one more skate night of the year, which was hosted on December 20th at the Steriti Memorial Rink once again. With the holidays and New Year coming up, the students were filled with spirit. This skate night was Christmas-themed:. students wore Santa hats, pajamas, ugly sweaters, and more. “I think the Skate Club benefits Malden by giving the students an opportunity to have fun, make new friends, and learn how to skate,” Gomes expressed.
There was only one thing preventing this night from being the club’s best night yet: a snowstorm, preventing many members from skating. However, those who persevered through the hectic weather conditions were able to attend and make it a memorable night.
Some familiar faces that were in the club last year also returned to the ice.“I chose to be involved with the Skate Club because I think it is very well managed and it is a good way to learn a new skill or better your skating,” voiced Rosa.
The Skate Club is an incredible opportunity to meet new people, become more involved with the community, and have fun on a Friday night. Be sure to check it out and follow @skatemalden on Instagram for more information and updates.
