The History Club, advised by teacher James Hill who teaches courses like AP World History, is a club that has helped students with their historical knowledge while providing a fun way to get students involved in politics and be more aware of what they are learning throughout their history class.
“I want History Club to be a place where people come and have fun, playing around with history-related things, so sometimes we’ve watched a movie, sometimes there’s some trivia games that we’ve done and things like that,” said Hill. “I want to make sure that it is serving the desires and needs of the people who are involved, so I don’t want to do stuff that they’re not into.” Hill’s plans for the history club are to give students a hobby that can not only be fun but are also very helpful to anyone who is part of the club.
“I didn’t start the club, but when I took over the club I would say it was modestly successful. This year has gotten a lot more participants where we have a class office or club officers that make the club fairly crowded,” Hill stated. They have successfully advertised for students to join the club.
Hill gives his reasoning on why the History Club started off successful: “The first year, it was hard to get anyone new, because I think one of the things that’s true about clubs is that people choose what clubs to join in part from their history knowledge,” Hill stated. Students enjoy learning about the American presidents and how Democrats and Republicans view others and their opinions based on politics.
“I just think it sort of deepens the connections in the school, which I think is important to big schools,” explained Hill. With many club members being unfamiliar with each other at first, “having more faces fosters a sense of community and connects people together. And it’s helped me get to know probably a few more students than I would otherwise.” With this, the History Club has gotten more students to socialize with each other and make more friends and connections.
