After numerous years of dedication, hard work, and teaching, Genoveva Mateeva is retiring from Malden High School at the end of the school year, marking the end of her teaching career. With her passion and commitment, she leaves an impact on her students that will follow them out of the classroom and further into life.
Over the years, Mateeva has shared knowledge, wisdom, and an appreciation for math with students across the school. During her career, she was awarded the Mass Insight Education’s Partners in Excellence award in 2016. She was one of four Malden High teachers to be presented with this achievement. She was given this award because her teaching helped her students perform above and beyond academically. She also received the Teacher of the Year Award from Malden High School’s National Honor Society in 2016.

Mateeva ensures that her students are able to succeed in her class. Her priorities are in seeing her students do their best. Typically, many students tend to get nervous from their academic classes, fearing that they may not be on level to succeed in the class. Sophomore Raquel Ferreira believed that “her class would be too difficult,” but as the year progressed, she found that Mateeva “is very good at what she does…and wants the best for her students.” Many classmates agreed with this sentiment, noticing that they have been able to perform at their best under her teaching.
Students have found that her teaching has opened them up to exploring new methods of learning and finding enjoyment in math. “It was honestly a fun experience to be taught by her… She introduced so many different ideas that make me appreciate math even more,” shared sophomore Ian Ian Ho.
Some of her students may find her classes challenging or “fast-paced,” claimed freshman Julius Scott. They believe that her lessons pushed them to improve themselves. Scott continued, “Having her as a teacher challenged me and showed me I can do better.” Although retirement marks the end of Mateeva’s time in the classroom, her influence will continue on in her students. The diligence that she has instilled in her students will not only be seen in her classroom but for the rest of high school and eventually in their own careers.
As this chapter of Mateeva’s life comes to an end, new opportunities open for her future. The Malden community would like to congratulate her and wish her the best in any plans she has for retirement. Her time and contributions to Malden High School will always be remembered.
