On Tuesday, Apr. 26, 2016, seven Malden High School students ran for the two alternate positions on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, otherwise known as DESE, Student Advisory Council. Voting was held during homeroom on Tuesday morning.
Junior James Mac is the returning delegate for the council. Juniors Gandy Louisne, Olivia Filipowich, Blue and Gold member Julia Parker, Nick Luong, and sophomores Cindy Siu, Jenny Huynh, Zachary Dunphy were all on the ballot, and if elected will serve on the council from the 2016 to 2017 school year.
The winners of this year’s election are Luong and Siu.
According to the Massachusetts DESE, the Student Advisory Council is made up of students representing their schools from all over the state. They are elected by their classmates to participate in making active decisions about educational policies and student rights.
Each school being represented on the council must elect at least two delegates, and one student on the council will serve as the student chairperson, and be a full voting member on the Massachusetts Board of Education (Student Advisory Council).
The members of the council also collaborate to work on projects that will make significant change in local schools, preferably in their district. Starting in the fall, Luong and Siu will join Mac on the council in representation of MHS. These three students show leadership qualities, and will be the voice of MHS students when it comes to having a say in their education. Congratulations again to Luong and Siu.
