Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Starting on March 1, students of Malden High will be receiving a free breakfast. The Whitson Culinary Group received a grant to fund the breakfast program for all the Malden High School students. Before only students that receive free or reduced lunch would be able to receive a breakfast. If a student wanted to get another breakfast it would be the full one dollar.

The Food Service Director Omar Hernandez noticed a decline in students eating breakfast and wanted to find a solution to this problem. With this new program all students will be able eligible for a free breakfast, you do not need to enter your school ID for the breakfast. Hernandez stated that the breakfast will “be more accessible”. The menu for the breakfast program includes ordinary breakfast items like cereal, and heated up sandwiches. Hernandez stated that there also will also be occasional promotions in the breakfast like a waffle station and an omelette station.

The breakfast will be available from 7:20-7:50 am. The breakfast campaign is called “Breakfast on the Go”. At 7:35 students will also not be able to sit in the cafe, this will reduce tardy student, and students who do not want to eat breakfast because they would be late to school.

Principal Chris Mastrangelo hopes that this change will “encourage students to wake up earlier to get a breakfast”. Mastrangelo noticed how students were either coming late to class because of the shortage of breakfast or coming to class on time without breakfast. He made a compromise by allowing the students to grab the breakfast and bring it to class. Mastrangelo believes that the hardest adjustment will be “students coming in at 7:45 with breakfast”. Mastrangelo stated that “In a perfect world students would come to school at 7:20 and sit down and eat breakfast” the compromise that has made is to allow students to grab the breakfast and make it more accessible”.

Students will have the option to grab a breakfast and sit down at the cafeteria and eat. Or grab the breakfast and eat at class. Although that will be the largest adjustment for teachers, there has been positive feedback from staff members about the new change.

The Whitson Culinary Group also funded for 20 large trash containers. These trash containers will be placed in the hallways for students to throw their breakfast and other trash into. Mastrangelo hopes that these trash cans will “hopefully cut down on trash” and help students who confuse the recycling bin with small trash containers. Hernandez stated that

“Each floor with receive its own trash container” to combat the trash since the breakfast program “generates more trash”.

March 8th is the opening day for the Grab and Go breakfast, on this day Nedlam the school mascot will be at the highschool, Pat the Patriot and a mysterious player of the New England Patriots will attend the event.

Overall, the Breakfast on the Go program will benefit Malden High school students. It encourages students to attend school on time for a breakfast and will be able to bring breakfast to their classes. The new trash containers will hopefully keep hallways more clean.
